Hello everyone,
My name is Tung Nguyen, and I'm delighted to return to the Asian Public Policy Program (APPP) at the School of International and Public Policy, Hitotsubashi University--this time as a faculty member. My research focuses on labor market regulations--particularly minimum wages--and gender inequalities in developing countries. My academic interests include labor economics, development economics, and applied microeconomics.
My journey with APPP began in 2017 when I joined the program as a master's student. The APPP provided me with rigorous training in economic and policy analysis, as well as valuable skills in econometrics. More importantly, the program inspired me to pursue deeper research and broaden my understanding of public policy challenges in Asia and beyond. I had the privilege of learning from and working alongside professors who not only had deep insights into their fields but were also genuinely passionate about their work. Being part of APPP also meant joining a vibrant, international community. I formed lasting friendships and learned alongside peers from diverse backgrounds--all united by a shared commitment to shaping the future of economic and public policy in Asia.
My experience at APPP laid a strong foundation for further academic inquiry and encouraged me to explore more advanced research questions. It was a natural step for me to continue into a Ph.D. in Economics at Hitotsubashi University, where I could build on what I had learned and delve deeper into the topics that interested me. For those who find themselves curious about the theoretical underpinnings of policy or eager to better understand complex social challenges, APPP offers a concrete and meaningful starting point for that intellectual journey.
Since April 2025, I have returned to APPP--this time as an Assistant Professor. Having witnessed how deeply APPP faculty engage with their students, I know this role carries great responsibility. I am excited to take on this challenge and to support the next generation of policy professionals and scholars.
